The Conditional "If"

Jul 12, 2026    Pastor Ed Snyder

The Conditional 'If' is a teaching document exploring the theological weight of the word "if," which appears over 1,600 times in Scripture. The core thesis: many of God's blessings and promises are conditional on human obedience, faith, and repentance, and this conditionality highlights human responsibility without diminishing God's sovereignty.

The teaching moves through six categories of biblical "if" statements:

Covenant and Obedience (Old Testament): The Mosaic Covenant framework, anchored in Deuteronomy 28, where obedience brings blessing and disobedience brings consequences. Also draws on Exodus 19, 2 Chronicles 7:14, and Leviticus 26.

The New Testament "If" and Repentance: Conditions for forgiveness (1 John 1:9), love expressed through obedience (John 14:15), and discipleship through abiding in God's word. Teaching point: God's mercy is conditional on repentance, not automatic.

Faith and Salvation: Romans 10:9 and Hebrews 3:14. God provides salvation, but the individual must believe and respond.

Abiding in Christ: John 15:7, John 8:31, Colossians 1:23. Effectiveness flows from continuing in the faith, not just starting.

God's Power and Possibility: Mark 9:23 and Matthew 21:22. The miraculous is often on the other side of "if."

Warning: Ezekiel 33:9 and Hebrews 10:26. Choices carry eternal consequences.
